Monarch butterflies migrate over long distances each year to escape the frost. In North America, Monarchs start their long journey to the South in August. In the Spring, these butterflies fly northbound. The Monarch Butterfly is the only specie in North America that migrates both north and south. Because the distance of these travels are so long and the butterfly's short lifespan, most Monarchs are not able to complete the journey. The lifespan of the Monarch Butterfly is less than two months.
