Ice ridges in the Beaufort Sea off the northern coast of Alaska. Beaufort Sea is named after the Irish hydrographer Sir Francis Beaufort. The sea is known as a significant resource for natural gas and petroleum. It is also home to about 700 species of crustaceans and mollusks, 80 species of zooplankton, and many species of fish including the polar cod, arctic cod, lake whitefish, and the Pacific herring.
