The caves at Qumran have become famous because it was here the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered in 1947. There are eleven caves along the shore of the Dead Sea, east of Jerusalem. The story tells of a Bedouin shepherd, who was chasing a stray goat found the scrolls in an ancient jar in one of these caves. They are mostly written in Hebrew and also Aramaic which was the common language of the Jews of Palestine at that time and some texts were also written in Greek. The Scrolls are mostly made of animal skins but also of papyrus. It is said these Scrolls have enhanced our knowledge of Judaism and also Christianity.
