Angel Falls is the world's highest uninterrupted fall with a height of 979 m (3,212 ft) and a plunge of 807 m (2,648 ft). The Fall is named after a US aviator Jimmie Angel, who was the first person to fly over the falls. Angel's ashes were speckled over the falls after he died on July 2, 1960. Returning from a air traverse on 9th October 1937, Angel, who was on a monoplane, tried to land it atop Auyan-tepui, but unfortunately the plane was damaged. It took 11 days for Angel and his other companions to come back to civilization. The name "Salto Angel" was first published on the map of Venezuelan government in December 1939.
